El Puerto de Santa Maria was historically linked with the royal house of Dukes of Medinaceli for over 400 years, from 1310 to 1729. In such momentous times for the town, such as the discovery of America, Luis de la Cerda, 1st Duke of Medinaceli and 1st count of the great Port of Santa Maria, was a key player. He was of great value to Christopher Colombus himself as a means to the catholic royal family to be able to carry out his projects.
The Hotel Duques de Medinacelli, is located in the old Mansion-Palace from the 18th century in the historic centre of the town.
