Plaza de Santa María is one of the most harmonious squares to be found in the grand old cities of Europe. At one of its limits, strategically facing the cathedral, we encounter the Hotel Mesón del Cid. Originally home to one of the first printing presses, the hotel now serves as a comfortable base from which to explore Burgos and its surrounds. With absolute respect for its wealth of history, and maintaining the original façade, the building has been painstakingly restored to reveal part of its fifteenth century walls. The López de Alzaga family has also modified an antique spit, making Mesón del Cid and its cuisine the paradigm of Castilian gastronomy and a place of repose in the monumental city. |
